Kayonza District is one of the seven districts that make up Rwanda’s Eastern Province. Known for its wide landscapes, warm climate, and growing economic activity, the district serves as an important gateway connecting Kigali to the eastern and southeastern parts of the country. Kayonza is especially recognized for its strong agricultural activities, with many residents engaged in farming and livestock keeping. Crops such as maize, beans, bananas, and rice are commonly cultivated, while cattle farming also plays a major role in the local economy. The district is also closely associated with nature and tourism because part of Akagera National Park lies within its boundaries. This gives Kayonza a unique blend of rural life, wildlife conservation, and tourism opportunities. Visitors often pass through the district on their way to experience Rwanda’s famous savannah landscapes, lakes, and wildlife. Kayonza has continued to develop in infrastructure, education, trade, and transport, making it an emerging center for business and regional connectivity in Eastern Rwanda. Its peaceful environment, cultural richness, and strategic location contribute to its growing importance in the country’s development.
